Not knowing what to do is self-denial
Reality is simple. There’s nothing behind it or above it, and it holds no secrets. It’s whatever is in front of you, whatever is happening. When you argue with it, you lose.
– Byron Katie, A Thousand Names for Joy
When we’re stuck at a crossroad, wondering whether to quit a job or to end a relationship, we’re always caught in a whim of “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!”.
My question for you is: Do you really not know? Or are you too afraid to face your truth?
Most of us already know what to do
Deep down we do know when we’re stuck in a situation that no longer serves us. Or when a job or relationship is taking a toll on our health and happiness. And obviously we know the steps we need to take to walk away.
But, why the confusion?
Self-denial. We deny our truth because change means to go against what we’ve known for so long. To take the leap means to exit our comfort zone. To accept that we have unconsciously become comfortable living in suffering. Yes, change is scary. It takes work and courage. But you have it in you, and you don’t have to do it alone,
Change doesn’t need to happen overnight
Yes, maybe quitting your job with no savings isn’t the best idea. There’s no need for a dramatic throw of a resignation letter, or an angry call-it-quits phone call with your partner. More so, the solution isn’t always quitting either. But whatever you know you need to do, you can always plan for it. Most changes don’t happen overnight. However, realize that you’re already changing within planning process itself. Start there.

In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole. As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.”
