The path less taken isn’t always lonely
“To be lost is as legitimate a part of your process as being found.”
– Alex Ebert, American singer-songwriter
There’s isn’t a single person that hasn’t experienced feeling lost in the woods of life.
- What degree should I study?
- Should I even do a degree at all?
- What should I do for work?
- Should I marry my high school sweetheart?
- Or do I just abandon the traditional route and backpack across the globe?
Regardless of where you are in your life, one of these questions have definitely crossed your mind. Personally, I’ve been sucked into the quicksand of rumination more than I’d like.
However, with a lot of inner work and introspection, I’ve learned to embrace moments of “lostness”. There’s been so much value swimming in that curious flow than letting my doubts paralyze me from taking action at all. And if you’re on this path as well, here are a few things you’ll probably realize along the way:
1) There’s value in unfamiliar paths
Venturing into unknown territory can feel uncomfortable and pointless. But as you keep going, you realize that the things you’ve picked up and the people you’ve met along the way can be uniquely valuable to you in the long run.
2) Only you know your path best
This “lostness” can tempt us into asking for directions from every Tom, Dick, and Harry we know. It’s not uncommon that we end up frazzled by the gazillion opinions on “the best way” to get there. Undoubtedly, there’s value in external advice. But oftentimes, deep down you already know what you’re supposed to do and where you need to go.
3) The path less taken isn’t always lonely
Like I mentioned before, every one of us will hit those brick-wall moments. So even though the path less traveled can feel dark, you’re actually never in it alone. Lost souls are everywhere. And those you cross paths with are there to share common consolation and worthwhile insights.
